It is because of Chet Baker that I first paid attention to I Fall in Love Too Easily. Miles played it. Bill Evans too. Sinatra. Mehldau of course has a brilliant interpretation. But Chet. Chet finds the essence and the emotion.
Here are two of my takes of the tune. Two versions played one after the other. One well contained, the second a little more free. Played at any other minute or on any other day, you’d get yet another version, of course.
Songwriter Sammy Cahn says, "This song was written one night in Palm Springs. When I sang the last line, Jule Styne looked over at me and said, 'So. That's it.' I knew he felt we could have written on, but I felt I had said all there was to say, and if I had it to do over, I would stop right there again."
