Like the two eyepieces in a View-Master—each with its slightly different perspective (or your two eyeballs, for that matter), the double-titled tracks here offer two possible lenses for viewing each piece. Recorded in a less-than-soundproof studio (enjoy the cricket), there’s a raw beauty in the simplicity of a simple upright piano. (Simple in sound and approach—there’s nothing simple about the piano’s 10,000+ parts.) So take track five, for instance. Is it a scene of a return? Or is it night? Or maybe a return at night? And why is ‘Battle’ also called “Steeple”? (Maybe because I imagine a simple country church service after a war. Maybe.) The uniting feature of this set of pieces is a straight-to-the point approach.
