From spare piano musings of Murmur to the craggy electronic Moored BoatsEmergence represents a start. A new beginning. Recorded on a felted upright piano, a Mason & Hamlin reed organ, and a collection of analog synths, Emergence was born from the isolation and life-jarring changes of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded in the early-morning hours before the family wakes, listening to the album is literally hearing the sunrise.

The collection of improvisation hints at what’s to come. With several more albums already recorded, expect much more music in 2021.

It is riding a hot air balloon above the Serengeti. In a basket floating through the air. The basket hanging from a bag of more—slightly warmer—air. Weightless, windless, speechless motion. Of all superhero traits, flight is the one to have. Soaring above the rabble. Or, if not the rabble, wheat fields in Kansas. Or, if not in a balloon, or as a hero, it must be at the piano. A musical murmuration of the starlings. Wings spread to inspiration. Unspeakable musical soaring. And just as the starlings swoop and rise, so may I.

Caleb Nei

Pianist, composer, and electronic musician Caleb Nei plays about 180 jazz dates each year throughout Virginia and Washington DC. His new project Wordless Flight takes jazz sensibilities and dials them back a bit—think piano-based indie film score. Still fundamentally improvisational, this music slows things down harmonically and features expansive, yearning melodies.

Beyond recording and performing, Caleb has also taught jazz piano at Shenandoah Conservatory and spent time as a designer for the indie classical record label, Sono Luminus. Last year the American Public Media’s Performance Today featured music from his album, Christmas.
